Researchers from our partners the University of Aveiro (Portugal) and the University of Otago (New Zealand) have completed a joint research initiative aimed at developing next-generation bioinks for regenerative medicine. Supported by the New Zealand Catalyst Fund and our Horizon Europe project, the international partnership focused on combining distinct material science and engineering capabilities to address current challenges in tissue engineering.
During a two-month research stay at the University of Otago, João Maia (PhD candidate) and Rita Almeida (postdoctoral researcher) from the University of Aveiro and the collaborated with Callum McFetridge (PhD candidate) and Max Yavitt (postdoctoral researcher). The research team integrated Aveiro’s expertise in human-derived biomaterials with Otago’s specialization in advanced biofabrication techniques and photochemistry.
The primary outcome of this collaboration is a novel photodegradable hydrogel platform. This technology allows for the controlled release of biological signals, offering a novel method to guide tissue regeneration and construct complex cellular environments in in vitro models.
The findings and technical knowledge generated during the stay will be integrated directly into our project activities, supporting the continued development of human-based bioinks at the University of Aveiro.
